Where did all the strains of pot come from?

Theirs probably hundreds if not thousands of strains of pot in this world. I'm sure when civilization first started, their was probably less then 10 strains of pot and since pots not manufactured and is all natural, how do we get strains like Purple Haze, White Widow, Sour Dizel, White Russion, blue berry, and etc.
