I am installing recessed can lights. Can I wire these in series?

This is new construction. 12/2 MC is the wire being used. Each light has a small box where you perform the electrical connection. The box has multiple punch outs. My question is - per NEC code - can this box be used to connect to the next can light (wire them in a series) or do I have to connect the lights with a junction box?
